The following is a brief description of the benefits currently offered to employees of Whitman County (in regular status). Benefits are subject to change and may differ according to collective bargaining agreements. Further information is available through the Human Resources Office.

 

Paid Leave

Whitman County offers paid leave in the form of vacation, sick leave and compensatory time.

 

Observed Holidays

Ten paid holidays are observed by the County plus one additional "Floating Holiday."

Medical Insurance

Medical coverage is provided through Group Health for most employees: Updated insurance plan comparison charts and rate sheets are distributed at the annual Benefits Fair. New employees receive medical benefit information prior to orientation.

Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is provided through Delta Dental of Washington for most employees. Delta Dental rates are included on the rate document indicated under "Medical Insurance" The plan comparison is here.

Members of Corrections Officer and Support Staff (COSS) Teamsters unit have dental coverage through Teamsters Welfare Trust.

 

Vision Insurance

Vision insurance is provided through Vision Service Plan (VSP) for most employees. VSP rates are included on the rate document indicated under "Medical Insurance. A VSP plan comparison is here. Since 2013 VSP has partnered with TruHearing, a hearing aid discount program. An information sheet is here.

Road Bargaining Unit employees enjoy Teamsters Welfare Trust Vision insurance.

Members of Corrections Officer and Support Staff (COSS) have vision coverage through Teamsters Welfare Trust.

 

Long Term Disability Coverage

A base plan for Long Term Disability (LTD) is provided by Whitman County. The base plan provides 40% of pre-disability salary with a 6 month waiting period. The Long Term Disability buy-up plan is optional. Applying for the LTD buy-up coverage during the open enrollment period requires successful completion of underwriting. The buy-up plan provides 60% of pre-disability salary with a 3 month waiting period. Consult a bargaining unit contract or contact Human Resources for details.

Employee Assistance Program

Magellan Health Services offers employees and their family's free confidential assistance with problems related to: marriage, family, alcohol, drug abuse, personal, financial and work. Contact Human Resources for the amount of sessions available without cost. If additional sessions are required, the counseling portion of the employee's medical insurance may apply.

 

Retirement Plan

Qualifying employees are automatically included in the Washington State Retirement Systems (PERS, PSERS or LEOFF-2). Both the employer and the employee contribute to the plan. See http://www.drs.wa.gov for more information.

 

Life Insurance

The County provides a $12,000 group life insurance policy for most employees. Additional voluntary life insurance may be purchased by the employee for self, spouse and dependents. Bargaining Unit employees' coverage may differ. Consult a bargaining unit contract or contact Human Resources for details.

 

Deferred Compensation

Deferred compensation is one of several voluntary benefits employees may select. Deferred Compensation is a supplemental retirement program and is offered through providers such as Nationwide, Security Benefit, Lincoln Financial Group and Washington State Deferred Comp. Flexible Spending Account

A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is offered as a voluntary benefit through WCIF administered by Benefit Solutions Inc. Two types of FSA are available, Medical and Dependent Care. A FSA allows employees to set aside a portion of earnings to pay for qualified medical or dependent care expenses. Money deducted from an employee's pay into an FSA is not subject to certain payroll taxes, resulting in a payroll tax savings. The FSA/DCAP Enrollment Form is here. The Q&A document is located here. Voluntary Term Life Insurance (VTL)

VTL is a voluntary benefit through The Standard. A new employee is eligible for the guaranteed issue amount of $50,000 when enrolled within the first 31 days of hire. Additional coverage beyond the guaranteed issue or enrolling after 31-days of hire requires successful completion of the medical history statement and underwriting. Insurance premiums are based on the amount of coverage selected and an employee's age. Coverage is available for spouse and dependents. For premium costs click here. Short Term Disability Insurance (STD)

STD Insurance is a voluntary benefit offered through The Standard. Insurance premiums are based on the employee's salary. There is a 30-day waiting period following a qualified disability or injury event. The benefit is 60% of your weekly insured predisability earnings reduced by deductible income. (Benefits will continue until you start receiving benefits on the LTD plan). Contact Human Resources for applications and further information.

Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D)

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance is a voluntary insurance through The Standard. Employees may enroll at any time. Monthly premiums are based on the coverage amount selected. Life Services Toolkit

A Life Services Toolkit information resources is available from the Standard Insurance Company. It provides information on estate and financial planning, identity theft, etc. There is also infomration for beneficiaries. A handout describing these benefits is available here.

 

AFLAC

Employees may enroll in a wide choice of AFLAC insurance plans. Policies include, but are not limited to sickness, accident, long-term disability, short-term disability, cancer, hospital indemnity, and dental. Contact Human Resources for further information.

 

LifeFlight Network Membership

LifeFlight Network is the air ambulance serving the Whitman County area. Employees may enroll for membership in LifeFlight Network at a discounted group rate. There is a one year plan. If an employee or family member is in a medical emergency and must be transported by LifeFlight Network, the LifeFlight Network membership pays air transportation costs not covered by health insurance. Office Depot

Office Depot allows Whitman County employees to purchase supplies for personal use at a discount. The discount is only on items that are on the Business contract. Contact Human Resources for further information.

 

Credit Union

Employees have access to credit union membership through the Washington State Employees Credit Union.

 

Financial Advice

Employees may receive financial advice and planning from the Washington State Employee Credit Union (WSECU), Security Benefit, Lincoln Financial Group, Nationwide and Magellan Health.

 

Part-Time Employees

Some part-time employees in regular status receive pro-rated benefits. For part-time employees to be eligible for benefits, they must work 80 hours or more per month. Consult a bargaining unit contract or contact Human Resources for details.

 

Temporary Employees

Temporary employees are not eligible for benefits unless required by law.
