Civil Service Commission
Whitman County Civil Service employees serve under the
Whitman County Sheriff. Positions include Deputy Sheriff, Corrections Officer,
Patrol Sergeant, Corrections Sergeant, Facility Commander, Office Assistant
and Records and Information Officer. All applicants are periodically tested and
placed on an eligibility list for hire according to their scores. Applicants
must submit a Civil Service Application to be considered for placement on the
eligibility list. Civil Service applications must be signed and notarized.
Deputy Sheriff applicants must pass a physical, written and oral exam. All other
applicants must pass written and oral tests. Background checks are required.
Currently employed
or previously employed, fully
commissioned officers with 12 consecutive years of experience ending no
earlier than one year from application may apply for consideration as a
Lateral Deputy. For more information see the 'Jobs'
section. A written exam is required. Passing applicants are then placed on a
Lateral Deputy eligibility list.
Civil Service Commissioners
oversee Whitman County's Civil
Service Rules, testing procedures and establishment of eligibility lists for the
Whitman County Sheriff's Office personnel. They
serve a 6-year term, with possibility of extension. The Civil Service Commissioners have regularly scheduled meetings on the 4th
