1. Do you have to live in Whitman County to work for the County?

No you do not need to reside in Whitman County to work for the County.

 

2. When do health benefits start after hire?

Typically benefits start the first day of the following calendar month. If you start on the first day of the month, benefits begin that day. Start dates regarding bargaining unit benefits may differ.

 

3. Is there a Union?

Whitman County has five unions representing the majority of County employees. Participation in the union is mandatory for specific positions and is indicated in the job posting. Courthouse Bargaining Unit Contract, Road Bargaining Unit Contract, Solid Waste Bargaining Unit Contract, Corrections Officers and Support Staff Bargaining Unit Contract, Deputy Sheriffs' Association. 

 

4. Are there cost of living adjustments (COLAs)?

COLAs are negotiated and defined in union contracts. Non-represented (non-union) employees typically receive COLAs in January at the discretion of the Board of County Commissioners.

 

5. Where are open positions posted?

Openings are always posted on the Whitman County Courthouse first floor. Positions are frequently advertised in the local and regional newspapers, as well as our County website. Occasionally they are listed in other newspapers and regional university websites.

 

6. How do I obtain an application?

Applications are only accepted for open positions. Resumes are not accepted in lieu of applications but may be included in your application packet. Application requirements vary. Please read carefully any specific requirements for the opening in which you are interested. Applications may be obtained at http://www.whitmancounty.org/ OR at our office: Human Resources, Whitman County Courthouse; 400 N. Main, Colfax, WA 99111, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

 

7. How do I submit an application?

General positions: Whitman County requires an original signed application. Applications must be completed in accordance with directions on the job announcement. Please read the announcement carefully for specific mailing requirements and deadlines. All applications must be received by Human Resources by the published closing date. Misrepresentation and incomplete or inaccurate information may be cause for application rejection, removal from the employment list, or discharge from County employment. Please read the "Minimum Qualifications" listed on the announcement.

Civil Service: Civil Service Eligibility lists are established to fill vacancies in the Whitman County Sheriff's Office. Whitman County requires an original signed and notarized Civil Service application. Applications must be completed in accordance with directions on the job announcement. Please read the announcement carefully for specific mailing requirements and deadlines. Applications must be received by Human Resources by the published closing date. Misrepresentation and incomplete or inaccurate information may be cause for application rejection, removal from the employment list, or discharge from County employment. Please read the "Minimum Qualifications" listed on the announcement. Applicants must possess these to be considered for the position. Civil Service positions require additional written and oral examinations. Applicants will be notified of those dates and times after the position's closing date.

 

 8. How long does Whitman County keep my application?

It can take several weeks for the department to review applications. The hiring department will make interview arrangements with applicants. After the position is filled your application is no longer considered, and a written notice will be mailed to the address provided.

 

9. Can I turn in my application and resume by email or fax?

Whitman County requires an original signed application. If you submit an application by email or fax, the original application must be postmarked and mailed by the closing date.

 

10. I mailed my application on the closing date. Will Whitman County accept it?

Yes, Whitman County will accept a postmark on the closing date.
