Whitman County Oral/Dental Health
ABCD Program
Smile Builders
ParentHelp123

In 1994 a group of
concerned dentists, dental educators, public health agencies, the
state dental
association, and State Medicaid representatives came together to address the
problem of the severe lack of dental access by Washington State's high-risk
preschool children. The proposed solution was the development of the Access to
Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) Program.
ABCD focuses on
preventive and restorative dental care for Medicaid-eligible children from birth
to age six, with emphasis on enrollment by age one. It is based upon the premise
that starting dental visits early will yield positive behaviors by both parents
and children, thereby helping to control the caries process and reduce the need
for costly future restorative work.

* As soon
as your bay's first teeth come in, clean his/her teeth everyday with a
clean, soft cloth or small, soft toothbrush.
* Give
your little one a pacifier or water at bedtime rather than a bottle of juice
or milk.
* When
children drink juice, encourage them to use a "sippy" cup.

brown spots on their teeth.
How Do We Prevent Tooth Decay?
 |
Avoid foods like soda pop, candy or sugary cereals. |
 |
Brush teeth after breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. |
 |
Always brush and floss before bedtime so teeth and gums are clean while you
sleep. |
What Do We Do For A Knocked Out Tooth?
 |
Rinse out mouth with water |
 |
 |
Use a clean cloth to gently press down on the hole in the gum to stop the
bleeding. |
 |
Do not scrub the tooth. |
 |
Put the tooth in a glass of cold milk or water. You can also place the
tooth between the lip and gum to keep the tooth moist. |
 |
You can also try to put the tooth back into the socket and immediately take
the child to a dentist, a doctor or nurse or you can go to the emergency
room for assistance. |

Tooth Tutor Program
Tooth Tutors use dinosaurs like Flossosaurus
and other friendly critters to teach children how to brush and floss and care
for their teeth.
Tooth Tutors are available to all preschools and
elementary classrooms throughout Whitman, Columbia and Garfield Counties.
