Welcome to Kamiak Butte, recognized as a National Natural Landmark. The park has over five miles of forested hiking trails. Reaching an elevation of 3,641 feet (second highest point in Whitman County), the park offers visitors a panoramic view of the Palouse region.

Keep your eyes open as the park plays host to over 150 bird, mammal and vegetation species. Pack a lunch and spend the day hiking trails or utilizing the day use area!  For the safety of your pet, the wildlife, park visitors, and other domestic animals, always keep your pet on a leash.

Fire Restrictions 

Currently there are no fire restrictions in place.

Fireworks Are Prohibited 

As a reminder to visitors, fireworks are not allowed in any of the County Parks.

Park Amenities

  • The Larch Shelter has a capacity of 100 people, with 10 tables, a large barbecue grill, and electrical outlets (first come, first serve, and available for reservations)
  • The Pine Shelter has a capacity of 35 people, with 4 tables (2 under the shelter), a barbecue grill, and an electrical outlet (first come, first serve, and available for reservations)
  • The Fir Shelter has 2 tables, no electricity, and one barbecue grill (first come, first serve, and available for reservations)
  • The Aspen Shelter has 2 tables, no electricity, and one barbecue grill (first come, first serve, and available for reservations)

Kamiak Butte is handicap accessible, except for some trails. Download a self-guided nature walk brochure or pick one up at the Whitman County Parks, Recreation and Developmental Services Department in Colfax. 

Shelter Reservations
Please contact the Park's Office at (509) 397-6238 for shelter reservations.  Reservations should be made at least 2 weeks prior to your event.
 
 Trails
The Pine Ridge Trail is recognized as a national Recreation Trail.  On average, the entire 3.5 mile trail may be accomplished within one to two hours.  There are a total of 5 miles of forested trails including a newer west end primitive trail.

Camping
  • Camping is allowed in designated areas only
  • 8 sites available on a first come, first served basis
  • $15 a night and $5 for 2nd vehicle
  • Each site has a picnic table and grill
  • Restrooms available year round, no showers
  • NO water or electrical hook ups
  • Water available in select locations of campground on a seasonal basis
  • This is a gated park with no access into or out of park from dusk until 7am

Vehicle Limitations
Camp sites are limited to vehicles and campers with a total length of 18 feet or smaller. Larger vehicles are not permitted on the campground road and may park in the upper parking area.

Camp site 8 is in the upper parking area, by the pay station, and is the only camp site that can accommodate larger campers.

Directions to Kamiak Butte County Park


From Pullman:
  1. Take State Highway 27 North 11 miles.
  2. Turn left on Clear Creek Road for 0.5 mile.
  3. Turn left on Fugate Road (Road 5100).
  4. Travel 0.5 mile to Kamiak Butte County Park Road (Road 6710) to the park entrance on the left.
From Colfax:
  1. Take State Highway 272 (Palouse Highway) east for 5 miles.
  2. Turn right onto Clear Creek Road for 7 miles.
  3. Take a sharp right onto Fugate Road (Road 5100).
  4. Travel 0.5 mile to Kamiak Butte County Park Road (Road 6710) to the park entrance on the left.
